It can be pretty annoying when dogs keep sneaking into your property and making all kinds of messes on it. They’ll defecate everywhere and dig around your yard destroying your lawn and plants, and leaving you with the unpleasant task of cleaning up after them. And if you keep a pet, dogs that stray into your property will mark their territory (by peeing), making your pet very uncomfortable.

But other than the mess they create, stray dogs could also introduce other pests such as worms, ticks, and fleas into your home which could be problematic to both you and your pet. These dogs also pose the risk of being bitten to your family – bites which could potentially infect the victim with rabies.

What is a dog’s life cycle?

Dogs generally reach sexual maturity between the age of 6 and 12 months. This is sometimes delayed in larger dog breeds which take longer to mature. A female dog will go through a gestation period of 58 – 68 days after mating.

Once the gestation period is complete, the female dog will produce a litter of about six puppies on average, but this number is highly dependent on the dog’s breed. Smaller dogs will produce fewer puppies with larger dogs producing as many as twelve in one litter.

The typical lifespan for a dog is between 5 and 13 years. Again, this is determined by the dog’s size and breed with larger dogs generally having a shorter lifespan.

How do you control unwanted dog pests?

Take the following measures to ensure dogs steer clear of your property:

  1. Keep your yard free of food and water. Stray dogs, like most animals that invade your property, will most probably do so in search of food and water. Make sure there is non available to avoid attracting these unwanted guests.
  2. Notify the dog’s owner. Sometimes the intruding dog could have an owner. If you can identify the dog’s owner, notify them of their pet’s behaviour so that they can take the appropriate measures to ensure their pet does not stray into your property.
  3. Erect a fence. This is an option that is a bit costly and impractical sometimes, but if possible, erecting a fence around your property can help keep all stray animals out.
  4. Use professional dog repellers. Dog repellers that use sound, ultrasonic technology, or water to scare away strays can be very effective.

Is your dog barking uncontrollably?

It’s extremely annoying listening to a dog bark all day or all night even when the dog belongs to you. The constant barking is not only a nuisance to you but to your neighbours too. These could lead to complaints, and in some communities, fines and eventual removal of your dog.

Dog bark control collars can help you avoid this kind of scenario by enabling you to train your dog not to bark unnecessarily. This type of collars use the age old concept of positive and negative reinforcement where the dog receives a negative stimulus whenever it barks. Done repeatedly, the dog will eventually learn that barking is not allowed.

Dog bark control collars can use one of several negative stimuli to discourage the behaviour. These include harmless (but uncomfortable) zaps, unpleasant sprays to the dog’s face, and ultrasonic sound. These collars can either be manually activated or automatically respond when the dog starts barking.

How do you protect your dog from pests?

Because of their fur, dogs are a magnet for insect pests such as ticks and fleas. These pests will feed on your pet which could lead to disease transmission or cause malnutrition symptoms if the problem is not addressed early. These pests will also feed on you when introduced into your house by your pet causing great distress.

To ensure your pet is, and remains pest free, ensure you take the appropriate prevention measures. These include:

  1. Checking for ticks regularly on your dog’s body and removing them safely using a tick removing tool.
  2. Protecting your dog from pests such as ticks and fleas using pest repelling accessories such as bandanas, body insect repellers, and doggy beds made with insect repelling fabrics.
