A great way to stop the growth of new algae in large ponds or farm dams, the Aquatic Barley Straw Bale is a natural product that stops algae from growing further. They are delivered to you in a ready to use packaging comprising of a net bag and a float. The use of Barley Straw Bales for the prevention of algae growth can be dated back to the pre-industrial era in Europe when agriculture and farming were major industries.

When put in water, the straw bales decompose releasing phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds have a natural signature that is similar to that of hydrogen peroxide and are the reason this method curbs the growth of new algae.

Directions of use:

• As a suppressant to algae growth, it is best to use the Straw bales before algae growth begins.
• Ideal to use after re-filling a water body before algae first appears.
• Submerge the net bag and let it float near the surface of the water.
• Place the bale close to well oxygenated areas of the water body (such as a pump or where the water falls) or in the centre of the body.
• Replace every 4 to 6 months.
• To make sure no algae grows, it is recommended to begin treatments a month before removing previous treatment.
• 1kg of Barley Straw treats a water body approximately 20sqms in surface area.

Additional Information:

• Depending on water temperatures, barley straw may take anywhere from 4-8 weeks to become effective.
• If bales start smelling, the rate of application is too high. We recommend removing current bale and replacing it with a smaller amount.
• If the holes in the net bag are blocked or restricted, clear them off by shaking or washing it off in the water.
