Flies are both a nuisance and a health risk when they invade your home. Their indiscriminate feeding habits expose them to a multitude of diseases which they will transfer to you as they feed off your plate. Flies feed on just about anything from human food to animal excrement. They are truly dirty pests that need to be gotten rid of as soon as they show up.
Before we get to the ‘how’ of fly control, let’s first look at some background information to understand more about this pest.
What is a fly’s lifecycle?
Understanding the life cycle of a pest is important when controlling it as vulnerabilities and other vital information can be obtained used against it.
The fly, similar to most insects, undergoes a complete metamorphosis. This means that it will go through the egg, larval, pupal and adult stages. Once the female has mated, she will lay up to 150 eggs per day, usually on dead decaying matter that will act as the first meal for the hatchlings.
The eggs will then hatch into larvae that will feed on the available food for 1-3 days. At the end of this feeding frenzy, the larvae will crawl up to a cool, dark place of low humidity where they will develop into pupae. It is during the pupal stage that the immature fly will develop its different features and emerge as an adult in a few days.
The development process from egg to adult takes approximately 2 weeks with the adult housefly having a life expectancy of about 30 days.

How to control flies?
Houseflies come into your house mainly in search of food. It is, therefore, important to maintain high standards of hygiene to keep these pests out of your home. Some of the things you could do to improve hygiene include:
- Cleaning food related messes and spills immediately.
- Storing your food in sealed containers.
- Covering your bins especially those used for food disposal.
- Cleaning after your pet; both food and excrement.
With these measures, the chances of suffering a housefly infestation are greatly reduced. They are not, however, always guaranteed to succeed and once in a while flies will still come into your home. To ensure a completely fly proof home, professional fly control products have to be added to the mix.
