The Zika virus is something that most people will have heard of, even if they don’t completely understand what it is.
Here at Pestrol, the prevalence of such a virus causes us great concern as the impact it could potentially have on the people in Australia and our own families cannot be ignored.
We hope the following questions help our customers have a better understanding of not only the Zika virus but it’s ramifications.
What is the Zika Virus?
The Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalisation is uncommon.
The side effects for pregnant women however are much more detrimental. The current outbreak in Brazil has led to reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome and pregnant women giving birth to babies with birth defects and poor pregnancy outcomes.
Why is it dangerous?
With any mosquito borne virus it can be easily spread particularly in less developed nations where standards of clean water and environment are not as common as they are here in Australia.
The virus not only can make infected people incredibly ill, however as stated before the effect on pregnant women infected can be detrimental.
What is the Australian Government saying about the virus?
Currently there is not a large threat to the Australian people as until recently the virus had never existed in our country. However with two reported cases in Australia in the last week and travelers returning home from infected countries the prevalence of the Zika virus could surely increase. The Australian government is advising women who are pregnant (in any trimester) or who plan to become pregnant to consider postponing travel to any area where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.
The government has advised travelers to do the following and by doing the following in your own home, you are sure to keep your family protected from any threat – whether that be the virus itself, or other Australian mosquito borne diseases such as Ross River Fever.
-
Apply insect repellent and wear light-coloured clothes to prevent bites.
-
Use screens or close doors and windows in houses, and use mosquito nets or traps for sleeping.
-
Don’t leave containers that hold at hold water (such as buckets, pots) lying about. (This is how the infected mosquito breeds).
-
Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants and use mosquito repellent.
-
Use pyrethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). You can buy pre-treated clothing and gear or treat them yourself.
